Welcome!

This site was created by fat folks who love to swim, for fat swimmers and our friends and allies. The intention of this site is to celebrate our fat bodies, promote the joy of swimming and other aquatic activities, and support fat folks of all genders and abilities to find safe, accessible places to be ourselves and have a great time in the water. We welcome feedback and contributions from other fat swimmers!

Is there a place you love to get in the water?

Great resource! A suggestion, although I’m not sure how to set this up: wouldn’t it be great to have an area where would-be fat swimmers can find each other to form new groups? I’m sure I’m not the only one who would love to find allies in the area to possibly start swimming with, but have no idea how to get started. Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

  2. The SIze Acceptance For Empowerment (SAFE) group in Los Angeles and Orange County California gets together regularly for swims since our founding in 1999. We are a loose organization of volunteers with a Facebook page to organize ourselves these days. We are currently looking for a new accessible pool. We like to pay less than $200 for 2 hours of swimming.

We’d love to find a warm, indoor or possibly outdoor pool, with easy access like a ramp or super easy stairs, preferably with really good poles to get out. We want to spend more time in the water.

In the past, the SAFE group has rented a pool for 2 hours somewhere with locker rooms that have bench seats, accessible toilets and showers and various levels of ease entering and exiting the pool. Our budget for this is usually $150-200. We usually have 10-20 people. Most people donate around $10-20 each.

We are open to locations. If several of us commit to looking into one or two pools, and post the results here, with pics and website and cost, we might be able to get a swim scheduled for June. We generally do Saturday nights or late afternoon. We like to be out of the pool between 6-9pm, so staring between 4-7 pm works best. Please check for parking and accessible path of travel from car to pool.
