PARKING:

parking plentiful? not really – there is a garage a block and a half away that is $6 in the evening with validation from YMCA, street parking is tough
disabled spots? yes, but you have to go down many stairs to get to pool
distance between parking and pool entrance? Block and a half, all flat.

MOBILITY ACCESS TO THE POOL AREA:

distance between parking lot and pool? see above
distance between shower/changing areas and pool? very short
any stairs required? a few stairs in lobby but ramp available, elevator from lobby to level where pool is at
are there ramps? yes

ACCESSIBILITY OF POOL:

stairs/ladders/lift? the pool is divided into two halves.  The activity pool which is 10m in length has a lift (not sure of weight rating), narrow stairs with railings, and wider stairs with railings (although these seemed really unstable to me when I used them).  The lap poll which is 25m in length only has narrow stairs with railings.

POOL AREA:

seating nearby? no
non-smoking? yes

CHANGING ROOM PRIVACY:

private changing areas? women’s side has a private changing area with own shower and toilet (pull down seat and hand rails), assume same on men’s side but not sure.  I have never seen it with the door closed so assume rarely used.
semi-private changing areas? Changing room is full of rows of lockers which provide somewhat more private areas, depending on which row you are in.
one big group changing area? see above

CHANGING ROOM FAT-FRIENDLINESS:

seating available? yes
what type of seating? small stools
is seating movable? yes
seating width/depth/sturdiness? stools are moveable but fairly low (could be a problem getting up and down) and seating area on the stools themselves are fairly small.  There seems to be plenty of stools available though.

GENDER-NEUTRAL FRIENDLINESS:

gender-neutral changing areas? i think there may be a family changing room available but need to double check.  Also unsure if could be used for gender-neutral purposes.  However, membership form has more gender options then M/F so there appears to be some awareness of gender issues.
gender-neutral showers? see above
can M/F locker rooms be avoided? yes
gender neutral toilets available? maybe in the family changing room, not sure

SHOWERS:

single stalls? yes, although fairly narrow
group showers? no
shower seats available? in the women’s there is at least one significantly larger stall with a pull down seat.  there is no shower curtain or door on this stall (unlike the other stalls that have shower curtains).  There is also the private room (see above).

disabled stall available? will have to check, regular stalls are larger then typical for downtown area stalls

OTHER COMMENTS:

Lap swim is a bit aggressive.  Five lanes divided by speed.  In my experience (limited to morning swim times), the slow lanes get taken by very very slow swimmers and the medium lanes are faster then I can usually sustain.  However the morning lifeguards are pretty good about managing flow as much as they can.  Its also important to check the program schedule.  Masters swim takes 3 lanes 3 mornings and also some evenings during the week leaving little space for others during that time.  Evenings also have a lot of swim lessons that take over lanes.

From what I’ve observed from the aquatic exercise classes in the activity pool, the instructors seem to be very size accepting.

  1. I would like to commend Karim, the life guard, for his friendly attitude and cheerfulness. Makes one feel very welcome. Also Robert does a very good job of controlling the swim lanes.
